Have you ever wondered why your partner, colleagues, or children seem to think so differently from you? You may not understand why they make decisions they do, or why they place such importance on things that seem inconsequential to you. It is possible to understand the answers to all these questions. The secret lies in the theory of Myers-Briggs personality type.
In 1960 the psychological theorist named Katharine Briggs had a lot of the same question you did. He wondered why some members of his family have been such a logical, linear thought process, when he has more likely to take the values and feelings at the time considering the problem. In research with children Isabel Briggs Myers, to see him this question and others, and found the four central aspects of personality. Each one can be rated as one of the following:
• open / Introverted-Do you get energy from people, or being alone?
• Sensing / intuitive-Did you see what is actually, or what may?
• Thinking / Feeling-Do you make decisions with the head or heart?
• rate / Perceiving-Do you want to make decisions, or keep your options open?
Our classification of each scale are combined to create four types of letters, for example, ENTP or ISFJ. There are sixteen types in all, covering all possible combinations.
With so many possibilities, you can imagine how much potential there are misunderstandings with the people around us! If we are married, or parents, or even work with someone who is very different from us, we are baffled as to how their minds work. The key to unlocking the mysteries and the people around us is to first understand themselves.
